Anene du Plessis has contributed to peer-reviewed research as a co-author on the publication 'Case report: An adverse response to cyclosporin A treatment in BALB/cJ mice,' published in Laboratory Animals in July 2023. The paper, co-authored with Vaughn Ticar, Allison Tschirley, Michelle Wilson, and Merilyn Hibma from the Department of Pathology, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago, describes an experiment where female BALB/cJ mice received 75 mg/kg cyclosporin A (CsA) orally daily for five days. Unlike a prior 2016 study with the same dose that was well-tolerated, this instance resulted in rapid toxicity, including body weight loss, moribund condition, and probable acute kidney injury, leading to early termination. Survival probability was 80% compared to 98% previously. The authors note reversible effects post-withdrawal and recommend alternatives like CD3 depletion for immunosuppression in papillomavirus studies. This work underscores welfare considerations in mouse models and acknowledges support from the University of Otago Biomedical Research Facility staff. On ResearchGate, her profile lists this as her sole publication with 3 citations.
